25% of Indonesian Women Do Not Plan to Normal Birth

Normal birth

From the results of the survey it can be concluded that normal childbirth is still the number one method of birth for pregnant women in Indonesia. When compared with caesarean section, the normal delivery process is simpler, cheaper, and does not require complicated tools to help the baby get out of the womb. Therefore, in addition to being a popular choice of pregnant women, health experts also strongly recommend normal delivery.

Normal childbirth can usually be done if the pregnant woman shows the following signs:

  • The contraction isn't too painful and the opening has reached 10 cm, so it's wide enough for the baby to come out of the mother's womb.
  • The mother is strong enough to push or push the baby to birth.
  • The condition of the mother makes it possible to push the placenta (the placenta) out, within 1 hour after the baby is born.

In fact, not all pregnant women can give birth normally. There are certain conditions that make childbirth be carried out in another way. Especially if these conditions risk endangering the health or safety of the mother, baby, or even both. Here are some conditions that make pregnant women are advised not to give birth normally:

  • Complete placenta previa, a condition in which the baby's placenta completely covers the mother's cervix.
  • Pregnant women develop herpes virus with active lesions.
  • Pregnant women infected with the HIV virus but not treated.
  • Pregnant women have given birth through a previous cesarean section.
  • Pregnant women have had surgery on the previous uterus.

If a pregnant woman experiences one of the above conditions, then the doctor will usually recommend a cesarean delivery.

Operation Caesar

In labor by cesarean section, the doctor will give an incision in the mother's stomach and uterus. Childbirth by caesarean section is usually done to save the mother and baby if:

  • Pregnant women have been induced but there is no progress in labor.
  • Containing twins.
  • The position of the baby's head is not on the way out of the uterus (breech or latitude).
  • The mother's pelvis is narrow.
  • The baby is wrapped around the umbilical cord.
  • The baby's heart rate is abnormal.
  • The placenta has a problem.
  • The size of the baby is too big.
  • Pregnant women suffer from certain diseases, such as herpes, HIV, diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia.

In addition to medical problems, caesarean section can also be done based on the will of the pregnant woman herself. Usually this is done if the expectant mother wants her child to be born on a certain day or date, for example on Indonesian Independence Day or on "beautiful date". In addition, giving birth by caesarean section also provides its own advantages, namely pregnant women do not need to feel pain due to contractions or worries of the perineal area (the area between the vagina and buttocks) is torn.

And who said that if you give birth by Caesarean section, then you can't give birth normally? Pregnant women may have normal childbirth after previously giving birth by caesarean section, depending on the type of incision and the number of previous caesarean births, the condition of the mother when giving birth, the size and position of the baby, and the availability of adequate facilities. What is clear, discuss first to the obstetrician.

However, just like other surgical procedures, giving birth by cesarean section also carries risks for complications, such as infection and bleeding. Whereas in infants, when compared with babies born normal, babies born with cesarean section are at a slightly higher risk of experiencing respiratory problems.

In determining the choice of delivery method, or to discuss the method of delivery that you have chosen, it is recommended to always consult your obstetrician first. In addition, do not forget to be diligent in checking the condition of the uterus so that you and your child stay healthy during pregnancy, until the delivery process arrives.
