The Importance of Sexual Education in Teens

Socialization and sexual education are encouraged to be given to teens around the world, including in Indonesia. World Health Organization or WHO encourages all countries to conduct sexual education, considering the risks of HIV/ AIDS transmission and sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents is still very high. For those at risk, sexual education is the primary solution for preventing HIV/ AIDS transmission.

According to World Organization of Children (UNICEF) data, there are approximately 2.1 million 15-19 year olds who are HIV/ AIDS positive in 2016. Of the data, about 1.2 million of them are girls and 900 thousands of other teenage boys. The same source also revealed that about 55 thousand teenagers aged 10-19 years died of HIV/ AIDS.

Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI) in 2012 revealed that adolescent knowledge about the use of condoms has decreased. In adolescents who have gone to younger adults, are better educated, and living in urban areas tend to agree with the use of condoms to prevent pregnancy, HIV/ AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexual education in adolescents is very important to do, because psychologically, adolescents are very interested in doing new things. If not guided well, adolescents can fall into the negative things. For example, having sex free, thus damaging his future.

In addition to preventing HIV/ AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, sex education in adolescents also aims to awaken the risk of free sex. This sexual knowledge can also be a provision for teenagers when they marry someday. Therefore, healthy husband and wife relationship can also help create harmony within a family.

Protecting Young Generation

Basically, the main purpose of socializing condom use in adolescents is to provide sexual information and education, rather than handing out condoms for free, let alone supporting premarital sex.

There are many concerns sexual education can encourage teens to have sex. But actually, this activity is a joint movement to protect the younger generation. In fact, effective sexual education lowers sex rates among adolescents, as well as the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies, so that the younger generation can achieve a bright future.

According to the Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI), adolescents need to know and understand reproductive health, in order to have correct information about the reproductive process, as well as other related factors. With accurate information, it is expected that adolescents will have the attitude and responsible behavior related to the reproduction process.

The socialization of condom use is actually included in the adolescent reproductive health service IDAI. Among these are counseling, information and education of adolescent reproductive health, along with introduction of family planning and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Generally the basic knowledge of reproduction recommended by IDAI includes:

  • Introduction of reproduction system, process and function related to growth aspect.
  • Planning appropriate age of marriage and pregnancy.
  • Knowledge deployment to build communication skills and adolescent confidence to fight things that are negative.
  • The influence of social media on sexual behavior.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/ AIDS, and how to prevent them.
  • The dangers of drug abuse on reproductive health.
  • Sexual violence and how to avoid it.
  • Reproductive rights.
Apart from agreeing or not on condom socialization as part of sexual education for teenagers, the fact that it plays an important role in preventing negative things in adolescents. Education for teenagers also includes reminding them to be able to organize and use their time as well as possible to do useful things. Adolescents will become aware of the dangers of sex and promiscuity at risk of causing unwanted pregnancy, increasing the risk of HIV/ AIDS transmission and various sexually transmitted diseases.

Reproduction is a process of mutual responsibility between men and women, therefore all young men and women need to understand aspects of reproductive health. Not only that, the support and upbringing of parents and family is very important in the formation of children's character, in order to realize the next generation of healthy and responsible nation.
